Diplomat, translator, journalist, theatre expert. Member of Russian delegation during peace negotiations with Japan 1905; with Russian embassies in Brussels (1907), Washington (1911), London (1915-1919), from 1917 to 1919 as chargé d'affaires for the Russian Provisional Government. Published a memoir, The Ordeal of a Diplomat, London: Duckworth, in Russian 1921, in English 1929. Also wrote on the theatre
